Asking for Help is Key to Your Well-Being
Career moms often carry the load when it comes to appointments for their children, sometimes to a point of detriment. Learning to ask for help and embracing your support system is key to your well-being and finding balance.
TESTIMONIES OF GRACE & SURVIVALFORGIVENESS
Understanding Mom Guilt
As a CHD mom I understand that juggling work commitments, family responsibilities, and your child's doctor visits can often feel overwhelming. You might find yourself feeling guilty for not attending every doctor's appointment for your child or missing important events like the annual spelling bee for your heart healthy (HH) child. This guilt, often referred to as 'mom guilt,' creeps in, and it’s time we learn to identify and embrace the guilt for what it truly is – an emotion that can affect our well-being.
It's Okay to Ask for Help
One of the biggest sources of mom guilt stems from feeling like you need to handle everything on your own. Society has a way of making moms believe that asking for help is a sign of weakness or indicates failure. However, it’s essential to recognize that seeking support from your spouse, a friend, or even a neighbor is okay; not only is it okay - it’s a sign of strength. By entrusting your inner circle with the care of your child, you are fostering a healthy support system that is beneficial for you and also for your children.
Giving Yourself Grace
Let’s face it; we can’t be in two places at once. Life sometimes demands more from us than we can give. Instead of focusing on the one appointment you missed out of twelve, or the store-bought cupcakes you had to bring because of your 70+ hour work week, allow yourself the grace to acknowledge that you are doing your best. Remember, a working mom is a busy multi-tasking superhero and missing a few events doesn’t diminish the love you have for your child.
In the end, the love and support you provide will shape your child’s world far more than any single event or doctor's appointment could. So next time you’re met with mom guilt, take a breath - give yourself some grace, and remind yourself that you are not alone! Improve your well-being by embracing the help your loved ones offer and cut yourself some slack – after all, you’re only human!
